The NEO Inventories are measures of the five major dimensions of personality and the most important facets that define each dimension. As some of the most well-known and empirically substantiated measures of personality, they have demonstrated utility in clinical, applied, and research settings.
The NEO PI-3 (Normative Update) is a 240-item measure of all five personality domains—Agreeableness (A), Conscientiousness (C), Neuroticism (N), Extraversion (E), and Openness to Experience (O)—as well as 30 subordinate facets.
The NEO now provides enhanced features to help you better serve your clients.
Also with an updated normative sample, the NEO Five-Factor Inventory-3™ (Normative Update) is a 60-item version of the NEO-PI-3™ that measures the five main dimensions of personality without assessing the individual facets.
The NEO Personality Inventory-3: Four-Factor Version (Normative Update) is a 192-item version of the NEO-PI-3 (Normative Update), and the NEO Five-Factor Inventory-3: Four-Factor Version (Normative Update) is a 48-item version of the NEO-FFI-3 (Normative Update). The Four-Factor versions provide information on only four personality domains (i.e., E, O, A, C), omitting Neuroticism, and features an updated normative sample.
In addition, the career-focused NEO Professional Development Report (PDR) can be generated via PARiConnect. After administering the PDR i-Admin, you have the option of generating either the Management Planning Report or Individual Planning Report.
If you have questions about older versions of the NEO Inventories? Visit the FAQ section below.
Looking for older (legacy) versions of the NEO Inventories?
Contact PAR Customer Support to get information on the NEO PI-R, NEO-4, and legacy versions of the NEO-PI-3 and NEO-FFI-3.
Where can I find the content from the NEO PI-3 legacy components?
The table below displays where the information contained in the NEO-PI-3 legacy components can be found in the NEO-PI-3 (Normative Update) components.
What do I do with my NEO-PI-3 legacy inventory?
If you have NEO PI-3 legacy digital inventory (i-Admins, Score Reports, Interpretive Reports) you can continue to use it until the inventory is depleted, without needing to immediately transition to the normative update. When your legacy inventory runs out, purchase the normative update version that meets your needs.
The process of assigning and administering assessments is the same for the legacy version and normative update version. You will follow the same steps using the normative update inventory in PARiConnect to assign assessments, administer the NEO, and generate reports.
If you have print inventory for the legacy version of the NEO PI-3 you can continue to use them until your inventory runs out, however, we encourage you to score via PARiConnect to benefit from the updated normative sample.
What do I do if I’ve already run a NEO-PI-3 legacy report and want to run a NEO-PI-3 (Normative Update) report?
If you have already run a report for a NEO-PI-3 legacy i-Admin or print administration, you can use the data set from that legacy administration and manually enter the data as a NEO-PI-3 (Normative Update) administration in order to run the NEO-PI-3 (Normative Update) report. Manual data entry does not require you to use one of your i-Admins.
I currently have NEO PDR i-Admin or report inventory, where do I find this inventory?
You may use your existing inventory, which will appear within PARiConnect under "NEO-PI-3 legacy," until you run out of uses. When you're ready to purchase more uses, you'll purchase the new combined NEO PDR i-Admin/Management and Individual Planning Report.
How can I access and print the Job Profiler, Problems in Living Checklist, and Profile Form/Nomograph?
If you have purchased the NEO Inventories Professional e-Manual, you can access the NEO Job Profiler, Problems in Living Checklist, and Profile Form/Nomograph printable forms by logging into PAR Training or clicking the links below.
The normative update for the NEO-PI-3 was collected in 2024. This sample included 1,855 individuals aged 12 and above for the Self-Report Form and 1,200 individuals for the Informant Report Form.
The NEO-PI-3 (Normative Update) demonstrates a high level of internal consistency across the total sample. For the Self-Report Form, Cronbach's alpha values range from .87 to .94 for the five domains, and from .54 to .84 (median = .75) for the 30 facets. The Informant Report Form shows similar, though slightly higher, reliability with alpha values ranging from .87 to .96 for the five domains and from .60 to .89 (median = .80) for the 30 facets.
Retest reliability for the NEO-PI-3 (Normative Update) is stable across the total sample, with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) ranging from 0.71 to 0.90 for the Self-Report Form and 0.72 to 0.95 for the Informant Report Form.
Whether print forms or i-Admins were completed, scoring is completed on PARiConnect. Scores for domains and facets are calculated via PARiConnect to T scores based on the choice of normative comparison groups. Score and Interpretive Reports now have the option to include the items and responses.
The Schinka, Kinder, and Kremer (SKK), (1997) Validity Scales are optional in NEO-PI-3 Self-Report and Interpretive Report. Using NEO PI-R items, Schinka, Kinder, and Kremer (SKK; 1997) created the Negative Presentation Management (NPM) and Positive Presentation Management (PPM) scales for clinicians to use.
What are the domains and facets measured by the NEO-PI-3 (Normative Update)?
To date, the NEO Inventories Normative Update have been translated into more than 50 languages and dialects. The table below lists 24 validated, published versions. If you are interested in using these versions, contact the publisher.

Have the items or scoring changed from the legacy version of NEO-PI-3?
No, the items and scoring have not changed. The NEO-PI-3 (Normative Update) uses updated norms collected to accurately represent the current US population and adds new optional validity scales.
Can I swap my existing legacy inventory for the normative update inventory?
Absolutely, we can swap any remaining i-Admin or Report inventory for the equivalent inventory of the NEO-PI-3 (Normative Update). To request an inventory swap, please submit your information via this link. Please allow up to 3 business days for the swap to be completed.
Why is the legacy version no longer available for purchase on the PAR website?
The legacy version is no longer available for purchase on the PAR website because the norms in that version have become outdated and no longer accurately represent the current population.
