As more information about adult ADHD is available in the public domain, providers report an increase in evaluation referrals for adult ADHD. Confounding factors such as comorbid conditions or symptoms that mimic ADHD can make this process more complex than simply answering the question of whether it is ADHD or not. The most common co-occurring conditions include anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. Without a thoughtful approach, clinicians could potentially overdiagnose, underdiagnose, or misdiagnose individuals, leading to inappropriate treatment recommendations. This live webinar will provide information on the assessment of adult ADHD specifically for differential diagnosis and treatment recommendations. Two cases will be examined to understand the similarities and differences that help with diagnosis and guide intervention plans.

Environmental deprivation, poverty, childhood abuse, witnessing violence, and pandemics can impact cognitive and social–emotional development in children. Schools can enhance emotional wellness through early prevention efforts, appropriate assessment and screening techniques, and an improved school climate to foster emotional growth for all children. Targeted assessment strategies featuring the new Feifer Assessment of Childhood Trauma (FACT) will be featured in order for teachers and educators to best meet the needs of today’s students.

Scientifically researched career assessment tools promote career and vocational success in people of all ages and backgrounds. These tools help clients of all types learn “what they want to be when they grow up” and enable them to pursue their vision.
Join Matt Parks for a deep dive into the Self-Directed Search (SDS), the 53-year-old gold standard tool in career assessment. The SDS is based on John Holland's RIASEC theory—the idea that both people and work environments can be classified according to six basic types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional. The SDS asks questions about an individual’s aspirations, activities, competencies, and interests, and provides an interactive, customized report that matches an individual’s personality and interests to a unique list of corresponding careers and programs of study.
Matt will explain how you can use robust career and educational assessment tools to help individuals save time and money, increase career preparation and readiness, and confidently chart their paths in life.

Join this session for an overview on cultural competence when conducting psychological assessment with people with disabilities. To conduct a truly comprehensive psychological assessment, providers must attempt to answer questions from referral sources and solve complex problems by integrating multiple sources of information. This session will explore several problems that affect the psychological assessment of people with disabilities, including the presence of bias, unreliability, and questionable validity. Many disabilities, including physical, sensory, and intellectual disabilities, can affect aspects of performance on psychological and neurocognitive tests, making it critical that examiners consider the individual’s disability, how it may relate to other functions, and delineate a strategy to ensure the appropriate construct is being measured. Dr. Andrews will introduce the concept of universal design in assessment planning, including test selection, administration, and scoring, and will explore differences between accommodations and modifications. Considerations for interpretation, report writing, and specific populations, and settings will be addressed. Dr. Andrews will illustrate ways to create a fair and unbiased testing environment and will emphasize the assessment and measurement of strengths.

Providing psychological services is not as simple as knowing and applying a series of techniques or strategies to a case. The key to providing high-quality, evidence-based services is knowing when, for whom, and at what times to apply specific interventions or approaches. It is important for clinicians to use a case-conceptualization approach, by which they advance from nomothetic information derived from the literature to idiographic situations within their practice. This live webinar will identify key aspects of a cognitive–behavioral model, explaining how to use test data to look beyond diagnosis to formulate a case conceptualization that drives evidence-based intervention. The use of a specific case study involving a child with anxiety and depression will be discussed.

This webinar describes ways to incorporate antiracist practices throughout the assessment process and offers suggestions for how to teach and promote such practices in training programs. Antiracist practice involves a constant series of choices toward equity at the individual, interpersonal, and institutional level. Racism is part of the history of psychological assessment. As such, the assessment process and its outcomes have resulted in harm to people of color. A crucial part of moving toward antiracist practices in psychological assessment is understanding the role and impact of racism in the history of assessment and taking active steps to change the assessment process. This program will offer a historicized perspective on the detrimental effects of psychological assessment in order to frame the need for intentional efforts toward antiracist assessment practices among assessors and educators. The presenters will focus on assessment of children, how school-based psychological practice influences the racial disparities we see in schools, and the ways in which test construction is moving toward antiracism. The webinar will also include information on how to evaluate a measure for use with clients of different racial/ethnic backgrounds.

With the increased awareness concerning best practices in the early identification of dyslexia, it is essential that practitioners are be able to accurately identify true disability cases, including within the English learner (EL) population. There are undeniable advantages to early monitoring and identification of students who may be at risk for dyslexia. As such, these practices should be extended to ELs. Because assessment of ELs adds complexity to the identification of dyslexia, sophistication and knowledge of reading problems and language differences are needed to ensure more accurate assessment conclusions.

Why should psychologists and other clinicians assess for emotional disturbance (ED) in the school setting? Parents and caregivers of 8.3 million school-aged children have sought help from school staff or mental health professionals about their child’s emotional or behavioral difficulties. Since the start of the pandemic, we have seen a significant increase in kids struggling with both emotional and behavioral difficulties. This increase may lead to an uptick in the number of ED-related assessment referrals that come across our desks and the number of students who require special education services. We can assess children for an ED by using the Emotional Disturbance Decision Tree (EDDT), which is aligned with and addresses all the relevant aspects of the Federal ED criteria.

These different approaches, however, often produce disparate results. This fast-paced, data-driven webinar will explore the evidence for valid interpretation of the BRIEF2 and common performance tests, focusing on how to validly interpret, integrate, and write about findings from both approaches.

Presenter(s): Dr. Stephen E. Finn
When psychologists give feedback to clients about assessment results, they face many challenging questions as to what they should share and how. In this webinar, Dr. Finn will address how to provide feedback, what information should be presented and how, and ways to make assessment feedback therapeutic and not overwhelming for clients. Dr. Finn will share insights from multiple research studies on therapeutic assessment (TA). TA is an empirically based, semistructured method in which psychological tests are used collaboratively with clients to help them gain new insights and address persistent problems in living.
This webinar will include a video of Dr. Finn presenting feedback to a client about her assessment results. By registering and logging in to this webinar, you agree that you will not record, broadcast, save, or attempt to share the audio or video footage used in this presentation in order to maintain patient confidentiality.
By the end of this session, participants will:
• List 4 empirically supported ways to make psychological assessment feedback more meaningful and impactful for clients. • Discuss ways to avoid injuring clients via psychological assessment feedback. • Discuss forms of written assessment feedback that are accessible to clients. • Describe a way of providing written assessment feedback to children.

Presenter(s): Dr. Liz Angoff
Please join Dr. Liz Angoff, author of the Brain Building Book, for a session on how to explain testing results to kids.
Talking to kids about testing results can be tricky! Few clinicians are trained how to do it, so many don’t.
Yet, when kids don’t know the reason for their struggles, they tend to develop their own ideas, often quite negative ones. Through assessments, clinicians have the power to help kids rewrite these narratives.
In this presentation, you will learn specific language, tools, and strategies for helping kids understand their testing results and their diagnosis in an engaging, positive, and empowering way.
